Rock County Historical Society
The Rock County Historical Society (RCHS) was established in 1948 to preserve and display historical material and promote interest in local history. RCHS owns two historic sites in Janesville, the Lincoln-Tallman House Museum (on the National Register of Historic Places) and Helen Jeffris Wood Museum Center, with galleries that include art, history, science and nature exhibits. Its research library includes vintage photographs, local papers and thousands of volumes for in-house use.
The society operates a seasonal schedule of programming that includes tours at both locations (by appointment only), lectures, workshops and special events. Programs are designed to educate the general public as well as Rock County residents, including students from preschool through grade 12.
Located in downtown Janesville, Lincoln-Tallman House Museum is a fully restored 1857 home that illustrates life during the middle 19th century through exhibits, programs and events. Known as one of the most complete historic homes in Wisconsin with over 70% of its original furniture, the Lincoln Tallman house also was a place where President Abraham Lincoln once stayed. Definitely something to check out if you’re in town.
The Rock County Historical Society is a non-profit organization supported by dues, contributions from individuals and community organizations, fundraising events, membership donations, and funding from federal grants. Support them HERE
